USE PROPER DEVICES FOR CIGARETTE DISPOSAL

CIGARETTES -- Freeholder Director John P. Kelly has issued a plea to smokers to use proper disposal devices for their cigarettes when out of doors, saying, "There seems to be a disconnect with some smokers not realizing that cigarettes stomped out and left on the ground ultimately are washed into our waterways where they create an environmental problem or become an unsightly addition in our detention basins after the next rain." Cigarette butts are pictured in a detention basin along Rt. 37 in Toms River in this photograph taken by Roger Shapley, an environmental Senior Engineer in the Ocean County Engineering Department, but this is a common sight in basins around the county.
