SENIOR SPRING HEALTH FAIR OFFERS PLENTY

OCEAN COUNTY Seniors will find information on senior health and wellness along with an opportunity to discover a host of community resources during the second annual Spring Health Fair at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Route 9, Beachwood.

The fair runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 17 and is free.

“We encourage seniors to attend this wonderful event and we especially thank St. Paul Lutheran Church for hosting this event,” said Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari, who serves as Chairman of the Ocean County Office of Senior Services. “This is an event that provides not only important information to our seniors but an opportunity to socialize while learning about programs and services.”

Community Medical Center, the Ocean County Health Department, the Beachwood First Aid Squad and the American Cancer Society will provide screenings and education. Many Ocean County agencies and organizations will be at the Health Fair. The mobile County Connection, which delivers information and services provided by Ocean County government will be parked outside.

“There you can even apply for a county identification card or a passport,” said Freeholder John P. Kelly, who serves as liaison to the County Connection.

Many local agencies, organizations and health providers will be available with resources and answers to questions. The Ocean County Office of Senior Services will provide information on programs including Medicare and HealthEASE, New Jersey’s wellness program for seniors. HealthEASE includes health education, exercise and walking programs, and a new program for people dealing with ongoing health issues, Take Control: Living with Chronic Disease in Ocean County.

“The fair gives participants the opportunity to learn how simple changes in nutrition, physical and social activity, and medication management can help you protect your independence and quality of life,” Vicari said.

Research reveals that 70 percent of the physical decline associated with aging is due to lifestyle behaviors.

“Whatever your level of health, whether you have no health challenges or cope with multiple chronic illnesses and physical limitations, I encourage you come out and learn how to make a difference in your own health,” Vicari said.
