NEW FIREFIGHTERS GRADUATE OCEAN COUNTY TRAINING CENTER
WARETOWN – Forty-two new firefighters who completed an intensive training program of both classroom and hands-on
instruction were feted during graduation ceremonies June 30 at the Ocean County Training Center, here.
“We are very pleased that these men and women are willing to dedicate their time and their efforts to
firefighting and protecting the citizens of Ocean County,” said Freeholder John P. Kelly, who serves as Director of
Law and Public Safety. “I would like to congratulate these new volunteer firefighters who worked tremendously hard
to complete this rigorous training.”
After completing a demanding 180-hour program at the Ocean County Training Center, which houses the Ocean
County Fire Academy, the graduates were awarded Level 1 Firefighter Certification.
The students needed a score of 70 percent or better on a 100-question written examination. Students also
needed to demonstrate physical and mental stability by passing a practical skills examination.
“Continue to train, train, train,” was the advice Chief William Boyle of the Bay Head Fire Department gave to
the recruits during his keynote address.
Boyle said the way fires are fought has changed significantly over the years but it’s in the training that
keeps firefighters safe.
Freeholder Director John C. Bartlett Jr. praised the graduates and their desire to volunteer in their communities.
“These brave men and women deserve our thanks for their unselfish willingness to protect our homes and our
families,” Bartlett said.
